Tipping
Sir,—Your editorial “No need for tipping” (February 20) understates the repugnance which many feel for this obnoxious custom. A system where servility can be purchased should be unthinkable to any true New Zealander. Experience overseas suggests that organised extortion would be a better name for the practice. A Royal motto is: “I serve,” and all people serve others in one way or another. If part of society is to be offended by and another grateful for the offer of a tip, we would then have a form of discrimination unique in being voluntary rather than imposed. Declare New Zealand a tipping-free zone. — Yours, etc., JOHN RAYMOND. Timaru, February 20, 1985.
