A.N.Z.U.S. alliance

Sir,—How many of us would go on holiday and leave the doors and windows of our house open believing that the burglars will respect our openness? Wake up everybody. Without A.N.Z.U.S. we are defenceless. — Yours, etc., RICHARD MACAULEY. February 22, 1985. Sir,—Anyone who rejects and deplores America’s imperialism, militarism, widespread corruption and social cruelty, as I do, is not necessarily against its people. I read American history, and admire its great humanitarians, its Constitution, traditional judicial system, universal social welfare provisions, and particularly the contributions of its humorous writers. On balance I am pro-American, but it is easy to be branded communist by the mischievous. My appointment to a D.S.I.R. job was cancelled, and Peter Fraser explained that my name appeared on a security list in the Prime Minister’s Department, as I had “frequented” the Communist Party centre in Christchurch. I 4 /

have never been anything but a Labour supporter politically, and my “frequenting” totalled one visit, having been invited to support Labour versus communism in a public debate. Fellow “frequenters” were the late Sir George Manning, on our team, and a Mr J. L. Hay, who chaired the debate. — Yours, etc VARIAN J. WILSON. February 20, 1985.
