Govt pledge to dam workers
Wellington reporter and NZPA The decision not to use the Kawarau River in Central Otago for hydro-power development should have little or no impact on work in the region for the next decade, according to the Minister of Works and Development, Mr Colman. He was opening the Cromwell mall in Central Otago during the week-end. Mr Colman said he was committed to seeing continuity for the existing local workforce. He would do everything he could to ensure that opportunities at Luggate
and Queensberry were realised, he said. The Government’s decision on the Kawarau was in, recognition of the varied' and genuine demands on the river, and a commitment to the principle of ensuring the multi-use of available resources, he said. Mr Colman said that the reshaping of Cromwell began in earnest in 1977 when the Government approved the town’s expansion and redevelopment and the first houses for construction workers were completed. Since then 500 houses had been built or relocated to meet construction and other demands, he said.
