Walker undecided
PA Auckland John Walker has not yet decided whether or not to compete in a mile race with his long-time rival, the American, Steve Scott. “I know there is a race planned,” Walker said. “But I haven’t said I will run. “It’s not sour grapes. It is just that I need a rest and some time to think about it.” On Saturday, the Auckland promotion company,
Global Sports, said it was keen to promote the race during a meeting at Mount Smart Stadium next Sunday. The two runners have been close friends for years, but the relationship soured in the build-up to the first 100 sub-four-minute miles after the New Zealander refused to wait for Scott to catch up so they could run the century together. After his milestone 100th sub-four at Mount Smart
last Sunday, Walker told Scott to “eat your heart out”. Scott, who has run 96 sub-four-minute miles, said at the week-end: “I want to whip John’s butt before his home crowd.” Walker has raced virtually non-stop since the Tokoroa road mile in early December and he said he would go for a long run and wait a day or so before making any decision on the showdown with Scott.
