Cahir likely favourite today

From ALEX McMILLAN Westport The Michael Pitmantrained six-year-old, Cahir, may prove best value in the $4OOO Westport Businessmens’ Cup Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting at Patterson Park today. Successful in last month’s Kumara Gold Nuggets, Cahir, the winner of four races from the Takinini stable of Ray Verner before joining Pitman’s stable late last year, has been slightly disappointing in his two most recent outings. The chestnut son of Noble Bijou was a battling seventh behind Noble Boa at Riccarton on February 6 when in need of a race and filled a similar ftlacing when he lined up in ast week’s 2400 m Dunedin Gold Cup, prejudicing his chance in that event by racing too keenly. Today’s distance of 2000 m should prove ideal and the fact that he will be encountering considerably inferior opposition to that which he has met lately will probably ensure that he starts as favourite.

Gritain and Graikos, the principals in a tight finish to the corresponding event on the first day, seem certain to be prominent again, with the costly first-day failure, Ribot Vain, and, if he starts, Longline, perhaps the best chances for longer odds. Omoto Lass, which had missed several days work before finishing a useful third on ■the first day, appeals as the likely winner of the second leg of the double, the 1200 m Tavern Visitor’s Syndicate Challenge Cup Handicap. The Blenheim-trained four-year-old was collared early in the run home on Saturday by Bo Diddley and Frederik the Great but seems certain to have derived benefit from the outing and should atone today, in which she meets first day winner, Bo Diddley, 2kg better at the weights. The John Healey-trained Bo Diddley was most impressive in his win on Saturday, nevertheless, and despite a 58kg top weight is sure to return another respectable effort. A five-year-old son of Beaufort Sea, Bo Diddley was registering his third win on the Westport course on Saturday, having scored a double at this meeting last year. Annie Beaufort, a promising member of John Parsons’s Balcairn team, was to have resumed on Saturday but was allowed to miss her engagement when she sustained a bee sting. Fully over this minor setback she would be capable of figuring prominently in today’s event. Frederik the Great, Ranfurly Lass, Gividago, and Charlie’s Pal, which failed to take any part in Saturday’s race, are others to be considered in an interesting line-up.
