Czech upset in tennis
NZPA-Reuter Oakland The defending champion, Hana Mandlikova, of Czechoslovakia, created the first upset of the ¥300,000 Oakland women’s tennis tournment when she beat an Australian, Wendy Turnbull, the second seed, 6-3, 6-4. The top seed, Chris Evert Lloyd, had few problems in her quarter-final match, disposing of West Germany’s best player, fifthseeded Claudia Kohde, 6-3, 6In the semi-finals, Lloyd will meet a fellow-Ameri-can, Zina Garrison, while Mandlikova will face a compatriot, Helena Sukova, seeded three, who has not taken a set off her in six attempts. Garrison, the No. 4 seed, struggled through the quar-ter-final against a compatriot, Barbara Potter, winning the hard-fought match 7- 4-6, 6-1. Sukova had an easier ride against Hungary’s Andrea Temesvari, whom she beat 7-6, 6-2. Mandlikova, the sixth seed, found the range on her returns to break Turnbull’s serve in the eighth game, then held on to win the first set. Turnbull, aged 32, leaped to a 4-2 lead in the second with aggressive returns and intelligent lobs. But she lost concentration. Her patchy play allowed Mandlikova back in. The Czechoslovak, who turned 22 last week, won four straight games for the match. This included a gift ace called out by the linesman but generously conceded by Turnbull at 5-4,15-15.
