Hunt seeks decathlon title

One of New Zealand’s most accomplished track and field all-rounders, John Hunt, of South Canterbury, will captain the Canterbury team for the national decathlon and heptathlon championships at Hamilton on March 16 and 17. Hunt, a New Zealand representative in the sprints and long jump at the recent world indoor championships in Paris, will resume his battle with his Auckland rival, Simon Poelman, in the championship. Poelman won the title when it was held in Christchurch last season, and both athletes have since broken the national record. Canterbury also has the third-ranked decathlon athlete in New Zealand, Peter Henry. C. McKernan is the third member of the senior team. The junior men’s team consists of two South Canterbury athletes, Toby Hunt and Garth

Pomroy. Karen Forbes, who has been troubled by injury this season, will defend her national crown in the heptathlon. Alison Leadley is the only other person in the women’s team.
