Theatre honours Cher
NZPA-Reuter Cambridge, Massachusetts Following in the footsteps of Meryl Streep, Ella Fitzgerald, and Linda Lovelace, the singer, Cher, has received the “Woman of the Year” award from Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding theatrical company. The nation’s oldest undergraduate theatre company gives the annual award to recognise lifetime achieve-
ment in the performing arts. A parade through Cambridge preceded the award ceremony and featured Cher wearing a 1920 s style fur hat. She was accompanied by balloons, the Harvard band, and half a dozen men dressed in women’s clothes, all cast members of the 137th annual all-male Hasty Pudding revue entitled “Witch and Famous.”
Conferring the award, Hasty Pudding officers praised Cher for her many accomplishments in entertainment and jokingly suggested that she find a second name, such as “Cher and Cher alike.” They also promised to give her a belt for her daughter, Chastity. When presented with the award, a traditional brass Hasty Pudding pot, Cher vowed, to make it into an oversized earring.
