Lunch with abductor
NZPA-Reuter' Beirut Spain’s Ambassador to Lebanon, Mr Pedro Manuel Aristegui, had lunch yesterday with the 7 family of a Shi’ite Muslim who kidnapped him in Beirut last year. “I think it’s a beautiful story,” Mr Aristegui said. i. “The same people who brought me to their house at gun-point in October invited me back and gave me a beautiful lunch.”
The former kidnapper, Mahmoud Rahal, aged 18, had offered his services as a bodyguard, Mr Aristegui said. “He said he would be my best defender.” Rahal and another gunman abducted Mr Aristegui on October 10, hoping to exchange him for two relatives held in Madrid after a shooting attack on a Libyan diplomat in September. The Shi’ite Amal militia negotiated Mr Aristegui’s release the next day. Mr Aristegui said he later visited the Lebanese in their Madrid prison and brought back news to their families. The Rahal family decided to show its gratitude by inviting him to their home in Beirut.
