Handel’s 300th anniversary celebrated
Several hundred Christchurch people celebrated the 300th anniversary of Handel’s birth to the tune of his famour Hallelujah chorus in Cathedral Square last evening. Handel was born in Halle, Saxony, on February 23, 1685, but lived most of his life in London. Handel appeared “in person” for the' occasion, in the form of the Court Theatre’s artistic director, Elric Hooper. He arrived in state, in a horse-drawn carriage with two attendants in seventeenth-century costume. His arrival was heralded by the Salvation Army band and a round of “Happy Birthday.” He conducted the crowd as they sang the Hallelujah chorus, reading the music from a huge leather-bound manuscript. The Christchurch Cathedral organ was amplified into the Square as a background to the singing. The celebration was organised to promote the Christchurch Town Hall pipe organ appeal.
