Nurse shortage to be investigated
PA Wellington A special committee will investigate claims that there is a shortage of hospital nurses, said the Minister of Health, Dr Bassett, yesterday.
The announcement came after a meeting between the Minister and the Nurses’ Association yesterday. The association had asked for the meeting to register the “extreme and extraordinary” concern of nurses throughout New Zealand, the president, Mrs Jocelyn Keith, told a press conference later.
Staffing problems had arisen from the inadequacy of nurses’ salaries and their conditions of employment, she said. These were most acute at senior levels.
The association Considered the “aggressive recruitment campaign” by Australian health authorities was also contributing to the shortage.
