Opinion sought on body release
PA Wellington Lack of public input to the debate on the controversial issue of early release of bodies for burial after postmortem examination has drawn criticism from the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer. He said he was disappointed at the response to his invitation for comment <’ on proposed changes to the Coroners Act, 1951. Announcing an extension of the closing date for submissions to April 1, Mr. Palmer said that in December he released two reports and asked for public comment. .
The reports were on the findings of an investigation into delays in the release of bodies for burial, and on a discussion paper prepared by the Law Reform Division of the Justice Department, titled “A Review of the Coroners Act,' 1951.” A new Coroners Bill will be introduced later this year. “It is vital that as wide a range of options as possible are put forward for consideration before decisions are made,” Mr Palmer said. Copies of both reports are available from the Law Reform Division of the Justice Department.
