Rape charge dismissed

A man in the District Court yesterday was freed of a charge of raping a young woman on December 7. At a scheduled preliminary hearing of a charge of rape against David Ernest Reed, aged 31, a workman, the complainant said that

her complaint of rape was genuine but she did not now wish to give evidence, for health reasons. Sergeant M. P. Caldwell said that the police could not proceed with the case because of lack of evidence, and invited the defendant’s discharge on

the matter. Defence counsel (Mr K. N. Hampton) asked that the charge be dismissed because there was no evidence to support the matter. Mrs C. M. Holmes and Mr J. B. Graham, Justices of the Peace, then dismissed the charge.
