A sub-committee of the Canterbury District Committee met at Riccarton on February 14 to consider an appeal by the racecourse inspector, R. D. Williams, against the decision of the Timaru Racing Club’s judicial committee to suspend K. W. Morton’s jockey’s licence for one day only on a charge of misconduct. The charge related to an incident involving K. W. Morton and the jockey, R. S. Bruce, which occurred in the jockeys’ room at Timaru Racecourse on January 25, 1985.
The sub-committee, comprising R. J. H. Boyd (chairman), J. A. G. Fulton, and M. W. Archdale, heard submissions made by the racecourse inspector, further evidence from R. S. Bruce and submissions made bv K. W. Morton.
The sub-committee expressed concern regarding the type of incident that took place and upheld the appeal of the racecourse inspector. As a result the period of suspension was extended to apply from the conclusion of racing on Thursday, February 14, until 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 28.
