AUSTRALIA Hooker in demand

NZPA Sydney Widespread profit-taking dragged Australian sharemarkets lower across the boards yesterday, and the heavy trading in Hooker Corporation was the centre of attention. The all-ordinaries index fell, 10.4 points at 785.2 points. National turnover was 47.6 million shares, worth about sAustB9.7M, with falls outnumbering rises almost three to one. Brokers said falls were spread across the boards with many traders believing the market rose too far too quickly. The firmer Ausstralian dollar and weaker copper price prompted widespread selling from the start of business, they said. The big turnover in Hooker Corporation was the highlight of trading with more than 9.5 M shares crossed in Sydney. Hooker

shares closed steady at ?2.11 after briefly selling as high as $2.25 in the morning session.

Among other situation stocks, Allied Mills was keenly sought with I.IM shares changing hands at a steady $3.25, although Arnotts, which has a large cross shareholding in Allied, dropped 5c to $3.80 on turnover of 1.09 M shares.
