Rugby tour and boycotts
Sir, — Jack Bevan’s plea that South Africa not be boycotted in sport unless other tyrannies are also boycotted seems reasonable; but it overlooks some considerations. One very important one is that the request for a sports boycott of South Africa comes from South African sportspeople. The non-racial sports bodies there, such as the South African Rugby Union (not the Rugby Board) have asked the world not to play international sport with South Africa until apartheid ceases preventing South Africans from having normal
sport from school and club level upward — in effect until apartheid is abolished. The non-racial sports groups, seldom mentioned in our news media, represent a very large section of the sportspeople of South Africa. One could expect that such a cry for help from apartheid victims would have all New Zealand sportspeople who believe in fairness in sport leading the fight here for a boycott. — Yours, etc., A. J. CAMPBELL. February 17, 1985.
