First bowls golds

NZPA-AAP Melbourne Australia won the first two, gold medals — the pairs and' the triples — of the women’s’ world bowling championships at Reservoir, Melbourne, on Thursday. Fiji won the silver medal and England the bronze in the pairs event. New Zealand and Ireland - the former champion — both finished one point behind England. Hong Kong took the silver in the triples and Wales the bronze. England was fourth, just one point behind Wales. Australia’s pairs win was sealed despite a one-shot loss to New Zealand in the morning, and a 23-21 loss to Israel in the final round.

The shots for and against percentage ensured the overall win for the New South .Wales pair of Fay Craig and Merle Richardson.

Australia’s Dorothy Roche, Norma Massey and Mavis 'Meadowcroft always had a vice-like grip on the morning triples match against New Zealand, winning 28-6. The win put Australia clear with 16 wins, while its nearest challenger, the title holder, Hong Kong, lost to Fiji, 13-20.
