Canty skiers race in U.S.A.

Several young Canterbury ski-racers have been competing this week in the United States national championships at Copper Mountain, in Colorado. In the women’s giant slalom, won by Eva Twardokens, the recent world championship bronze medallist, Juliet Johnston, aged 16, of Canterbury, was the best of the New Zealanders. She was placed a creditable fifty-eighth in a time of 2min 31.225, making 110 F.I.S. points. Justine Jones, of Queens-

town, finished in sixtieth place in 2min 34.80 s and Julie Satterthwaite, of Canterbury, was sixty-first in 2min 34.945. In the women’s slalom, won by Ann Medander with Twardokens second, only one of the New Zealanders finished, Satterthwaite being placed thirty-sixth in a field of 42. She made 149 F.I.S. points. One New Zealander, lan McLean, of Canterbury, finished both runs of the men’s giant slalom, but none finished in the men’s slalom.
