Crafts extended
By JOHN HUTCHINSON in California “Kahurangi — Treasures from New Zealand,” an exhibition of contemporary New Zealand crafts which was to have closed in Pasadena, California, last month is being held over until March. The exhibition has generated so much interest that Mr David Kamansky,. director of the Pacific Asia Museum, asked that it be extended. It has been sponsored by the museum, the New Zealand Government, and the Olympic Arts Festival. The show opened in June
and will now close on March 3. It includes works in ceramics, textiles, jade, bone, wood and ivory by 22 artists working in New Zealand. One of them is Mr Hapi Maxwell, who had been at the museum last month demonstrating to visitors his craft as a master carver of greenstone. His work called “Kahurangi Kiwi,” cut from apple-green “flower” nephrite, was commissioned especially for the exhibition. His appearances conclude the Visiting New Zealand Artists Program, made possible by Air New Zealand.
