Factual reports and propaganda
Sir, — A newspaper recently had to publish retractions of an article purporting to be a factual report of Russian activities in Afghanistan. The article was a total fabrication by a New Zealand author. I wonder how many more of the “factual” reports are fabricated for political reasons. The Russian people received praise and sympathy during the 1939-45 conflict, welcomed as allies by Britain and America. Immediately after the fall of Nazi Germany, General Patton wished to continue the advance into Russia. Ever since, the United States has systematically hedged Russia in with threats and nuclear weapons. If someone set up machine guns along the border of my property, I would consider myself justified in taking retaliatory measures. Remember it was the United States, not Russia, which first used nuclear weapons. Clearly the United States is prepared to use them. Their “umbrella contains no protection — only fallout. — Yours, etc., (Mrs) A. J. FLANAGAN® February 12, 1985.
