National skating trialists
Three Canterbury roller skaters are in line for national selection and international competition within the next 18 months. Graeme Litt (above, left), Debbie O’Keefe and Roger Hawkins were all named in trial squads after the recent New Zealand championships.
Hawkins, who had four victories, two on the road and two on the flat track, in the intermediate men’s events at the national championships and Litt, who was third in the senior men’s 300 time trial on the road, have been included among trialists from which a team will be chosen to compete in the world banked-track championships in the United States later this year.
Hawkins was also named in a squad of possibilities, along with O’Keefe, for next year’s world road championships in Australia. Three other Rollerdrome skaters, Angela Hawkins, Nichola Roberton and Michael Drummond, have been included in the South Island junior speed team to race against its North Island junior speed team to race against its North Island counterpart in a series of tours in March and April.
The circuit involves racing at Timaru, Dunedin and Hastings. At present all are training assiduously for the New Zealand banked-track championships at Rollerdrome on March 2 and 3.
