Rail fares up

PA Wellington The Railways Corporation has increased the fares for

some of its long-distance bus and train services to take account of increased road-user charges and wages. The fares had risen an average of 6 per cent, but for competitive reasons some charges had risen more, some less, and some not at all, said a corporation

spokesman yesterday. Some of the new charges (with old ones in brackets) are:

Wellington-Auckland: Silver Fern railcar, $62.80 ($59.20); Northerner train, $55.90 ($52.70). Picton-Christchurch: rail, $23.30 ($21.90); road, $24 ($22.50). The spokesman said longdistance fares last rose in October to take account of devaluation.
