Battleship ban vetoed
By

San Francisco
The Mayor of San Francisco, Dianne Feinstein, has vetoed a resolution adopted a few days earlier by the city’s board of supervisors (councillors) which opposed basing the battleship, U.S.S. Missouri here, principally on the grounds of its nuclear warfare capability. The vote was 6 to 5 and it is unlikely that her veto can be overturned; eight votes are required to do that. A leader of the slim majority however has warned the mayor that it has the power to block the funds she wants for port improvements which would help persuade the Navy to bring the ship here.
