$75 fine for running on to cricket field

A young man who ran on to the field to shake the hand of a player at Lancaster Park on Wednesday during the one-day cricket match between New Zealand and Pakistan was fined $75 by Judge Pain in the District Court yesterday. Peter William Bickle, aged 18, unemployed, of Auckland, admitted behaving in a disorderly manner at the park. Detective Sergeant B. M. Roswell said the incident took place at 1.55 p.m. Bickle, a spectator, jumped a fence, ran across the ground while play was in progress and shook the hand of one of the cricketers. In explanation to the police, the defendant, who was intoxicated at the time, said he was merely trying to congratulate a player.
