Harpoon put down
PA Auckland Harpoon, one of the best gallopers at Matamata, has been destroyed after suffering a perforated bowel. The disaster came only days after the good-looking chestnut had resumed training after a spell. Harpoon, from the stable of Jim Gibbs and Roger James, raced 25 times for three wins, three seconds, four thirds, four fourths and $13,610 in stakes. He was at peak only two months ago, beating Gold Lomond and Maggie Bee in the $7OOO Hamilton Caterers Handicap (2100 m at Te Rapa. He also managed a third behind Maggie Bee and Shagolvin in the $20,000 Governor-General’s Cup (2200 m at in December.
