Thatcher gives Rock pledge

NZPA-Reuter London

Britain’s Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, reaffirmed yesterday that Britain would not give up sovereignty over Gibraltar without the inhabitants’ agreement. Answering questions in Parliament the day after Spain reopened land and sea links with the British colony after a 16-year break, Mrs Thatcher said: “We do cherish the freedom of the

people of Gibraltar to decide their future.” The Government intended to maintain fully its commitment to honour the wishes of the people of Gibraltar.

“Her Majesty’s Government will never enter into arrangements under which the people of Gibraltar would pass under the sovereignty of another State against their freely and democratically expressed wishes,” she said.
