Wind spoils records
PA Hamilton Fast times in the men’s 110 m hurdles and women’s 100 m hurdles at the England v. New Zealand under 20 athletics test at Hamilton last evening were initially hailed as New Zealand all comers records. However, they were disallowed because of excessive wind assistance. The winners of these races were both from England, Steve Buckeridge, who took the men’s race in 14.385, and Sally Gunnell, who was the first
woman in 13.465. Andrew Heaton’s (New Zealand) time of 14.65 s for third could not be recognised as a national junior record.
New . Zealand’s Dale McClunie, who was beaten by an Australian in the recent under 20 competition in Australia but finished ahead of the Englishmen, again proved his class by dead-heating for honours with England's Trevor McKenzie in the 100 m. They were beaten to the line by one of the invited runners who filled up the fields, Canterbury’s Rhys Dacre. Megan Clarken (New Zealand) again chased home the English Olympic representative, Simone Jacobs, in the 100 m.
England’s Diane Edwards ran one of the fastest 800 m times by a woman in New Zealand when she registered 2min 03.975.
