Stoppages expected at car plants
PA Auckland Stoppages at carassembly plants are expected after a breakdown in talks between the Engineers’ Union and employers. Production has already stopped at the Toyota plant in Thames. The secretary of the Engineers’ Union, Mr Jim Butterworth, said other car-assembly plants would follow suit this week. He said the talks collapsed because of the combined employers’ proposal to standardise payments throughout the industry. The union wants to
dual agreements with each
plant rather than have a national agreement. “A national agreement is far too rigid. There are too many variations in each car plant,” said Mr Butterworth. “Some payments could be standardised but not all.” No agreement could be reached and the talks collapsed. Workers at individual plants have filed claims with their employers for further negotiations. Mr Butterworth said employers were refusing meetings.
