Biggest threat to treaty —claim

NZPA-AAP Canberra The Australian Prime Minister’s reversal of the decision to assist the United States MX missile tests was the biggest threat to the A.N.Z.U.S. Treaty yet, said the Deputy National Party Leader, Mr Ralph Hunt. “No single action by any Government has done more to strengthen the Soviet Union’s position in its power play with the United States and the Western alliance,” Mr Hunt said.

In backing down to pressure from the radical Left, Mr Hawke had run away from his own convictions and had threatened the only defence alliance protecting Australia, he said. Mr Hunt said the United States had been publicly embarrassed on the eve of disarmament talks with the Soviet Union.
