B. Hibberd takes heavy fall

PA Tauherenikau A Palmerston North jockey, Brian Hibberd, is experiencing a rough and tumble time at present. In the opening event of the Carterton Racing Club’s meeting at Tauherenikau yesterday, Hibberd took a heavy fall from his mount, Good Keen Man, but escaped serious injury. At Wairoa last Saturday Hibberd was thrown to the ground when a horse reared in the starting stalls. “She flipped over the back of the barrier and I ended up landing on my head,” said a sore Hibberd yesterday. Hibberd had to forego his remaining mounts at

Wairoa, and had to give away his remaining five mounts yesterday. Yesterday’s fall came about when Good Keen Man broke a shoulder, unhindered, during the running, and Hibberd crashed to the turf 800 m out. Good Keen Man went to the outside of the field and did not seriously disrupt the running of the race. “I tried to hold him up but with him breaking his shoulder I couldn’t do it for long,” said Hibberd, who hopes to be back riding at Awapuni on Saturday. Good Keen Man was put down. The horse, a four-year-old gelding by Vice Regal, was trained at Otaki by Ken Thomson.
