Shipping news More vessels calling

More trading vessels are calling at Lyttelton, according to figures recently released by the Harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Barbour. In his report to the Lyttelton Harbour Board, Captain Barbour said that 232 vessels with a total net tonnage of 1,185,270 tons called at the port between October 1, 1984, and January 21, 1985. This compares with the arrival of 203 vessels with a combined tonnage of 960,988 tons which called during the corresponding period in 198384. During the 3¥a-month period 105 overseas vessels called, representing an increase of 25 vessels. Vessels servicing the Pacific trades made 26 calls to Lyttelton with a combined tonnage of 78,689 tons, an increase of five in the number of calls by vessels on this trade. While coastal shipping vessels again contributed to the bulk of the vessels which called, the number of calls were down by one on the corresponding period in 198384. During the period, 101 coastal vessels called, which represented a decrease in combined tonnage of 45,697 tons. For the period between November 27, 1984, and January 21, 1985, 12 Russian, 11 Korean, 10 Japanese, and one Taiwanese fishing vessels visited the port for fuel, stores and medical attention for crewmembers, Captain Barbour said.
