Dispute hits TV news

PA Wellington Industrial action to be taken by broadcasting technicians today will disrupt international news and sports coverage. The decision by technicians to impose a ban from 9 a.m. on outside broadcasts and satellite reception in support of a 20 per cent pay claim by the Public Service Association effectively means there will be no televised sport or coverage of international news events.

The P.S.A. seeks a 20 per cent margin above the basic guideline of 6.5 per cent to 7 per cent. A P.S.A. spokesman on

broadcasting, Mr Tony Simpson, said the P.S.A. was “not greedily going for a 27 per cent increase ... but for 20 per cent catch-up from the time the wage freeze was imposed in 1982.” Technicians are upset that other groups, once on pay parity with them, have moved ahead.

The corporation says it cannot make a pay offer on its own without considering the effect on the rest of the State services.

Technicians have also put a ban on working overtime. Coverage of local news events will not be affected. Live radio coverage of racing will be affected.
