The World Boxing Council super welterweight champion, Thomas Hearns, has been named “Fighter of the Year” by the New York Boxing Writers’ Association. Hearns, who will challenge Marvin Hagler for Hagler’s undisputed middleweight title on April
15 in Las Vegas, won all three of his bouts last, year, including a second round knock-out over Panama’s Roberto Duran. Muhammad Ali was named the recipient of the James J. Walker award, for long and meritorious service to boxing which commemorates the former New York city mayor.
