Christians and the hunt
Sir,—Not all of us are as gormless as some of your correspondents assume. We are quite capable of recognising general statements, undistributed middles and statements begging the question. We are, therefore, neither impressed not misled by politicians, economists, Arthur May and others seeking to boost a weak argument with unconfirmed and unverifiable references. Arthur May has the fundamentalist penchant for quoting Scripture (to his own ends) out of context. He claims Matthew, viii in support of his thesis that “what is permitted on Earth is permitted in Heaven.” Permitted by whom, pray? Also, could he name one “self-professed Christian,” high ranking in the Church, who hunts on Saturday and on the Lord’s Day preaches on “thou shalt not kill?” Or is this just a purple patch? — Yours, etc.,
KENNETH SCHOLLAR. January 22, 1985.
