Teachers give approval

The teaching associations are pleased with the latest schemes announced by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall. A permanent part-time scheme has been introduced for kindergarten and secondary teachers and a job-sharing scheme has been approved for primary teachers. Mr P. Capper, the assistant secretary of the PostPrimary Teachers’ Association, said that the association favoured the scheme. It meant that a part-time teacher would have the same job security, as other

teachers, he said. Until now they have had no security of tenure. The scheme would apply to many people, said Mr Capper. A job-sharing scheme was “in the pipeline.” Ms Jeanie McCafferty, the president of the Free Kindergarten Teachers’ Association, said that the association had been wanting and negotiating for the scheme for a long time. It enabled the part-time teachers to have their leave and pay calculated on the same basis as a full-time teacher.
