Tourism plans are ‘paying off’
Wellington reporter The new vigour in the tourist industry this summer reflects the success of the Government’s policies, according to the Minister of Tourism and Marketing, Mr Moore. “Devaluation and the tourism marketing strategy we implemented immediately on taking office are paying off,” he said yesterday. The lower value of the dollar had made New Zealand a bargain destination for overseas tourists and persuaded New Zealanders to holiday within their own country. Overseas visitor arrivals continued to increase 9 per cent a month and, in the year ended November,
overseas exchange earnings from tourism had topped the billion dollar mark, Mr Moore said. “We have planned for this by the decision to buy three wide-bodied twin-jet aircraft and an additional Boeing 747,” he said. “We have addressed the problem of the shortage of first-class accommodation for these tourists by the Budget move of extending the 9.5 per cent grants scheme for large Auckland hotels to Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.” Mr Moore said to encourage further overseas tourism negotiations would be held with other airlines to reach agreements similar to those made with Argentinian and Canadian Airways.
