Canty sidecars supreme

Showing a little more depth than its Nelson counterpart, a three-man Canterbury sidecar team scored a seven-point victory in the teams' racing at Lucas Batteries International Speedway on Sunday evening. Don McKenzie, Andy Willan, Alan Bryce, and Wayne Cameron continued their recent good form to provide the foundations for the Canterbury win. The Nelson team relied on Gavin Sendall and Craig Webby to score 11 of the team’s 26 points. The Canterbury captain, Bryce, gave his team a good start by winning the first heat from Nelson's Sendall, Stuart Scaife and Sheree Gardiner. Sendall trailed McKenzie for the opening lap in the middle heat, but powered his way to the front on the Prison bend of the next lap with Bryce passing his team-mate on the next lap to claim second place. This left Canterbury leading by 2019. Sendall came from behind to lead the six-man field out of the first turn but a snapped chain put his machine out of the race and ended Nelson’s chances of over-all victory. McKenzie won the race with Bryce finally getting the better of Nelson’s John Bolton and Pat Dillon, with the rivals swapping places twice on the final bend. Canterbury’s other pairing of John Sullivan and Craig Williams excelled in the supporting races to collect a win, a second and a third. The best race was the Gavin McKay Motors feature, in which Sullivan passed Sendall on the Prison bend and held out a determined challenge from the visiting pairing. The other classes produced four dominant competitors. Larry Ross was unbeaten in three starts, and Chris Beach, Selwyn Everett and Bruce Hobbs were supreme in the car classes. Beach again showed too much speed through the traffic in winning his three races and also finished the Countdown Foodbarn series unbeaten. Jack McKitterick and Gerald Ness, in their first season of racing, showed good form to finish second and third in the series. Hobbs was impressive in winning his three sprintcar races, leading the final race from the start to set a record for six laps. Mike Allen won the Imperial Cut Price Liquor “Personality of the Night” award with three good drives
