Film city sign changed
NZPA-AP Los Angeles The famous Hollywood sign overlooking the city was given a new message yesterday. Vandals covered its giant letters with sheets bearing new ones, but noone seemed to understand the message. “Somebody went up there during the night and altered it to read ‘RAFFYSOD,’ ” said a police sergeant, Ron Dina. “I think it’s a rock group of some kind.” He said an officer had noticed the alteration when he glanced at the familiar sign about 7:30 a.m. Frankie Highland, an editor at radio station KNX, which is about 2km from the sign, said she thought it was “some ethnic group or foreign group trying to get a message across that nobody understands”. Sergeant Dina said he did not know when the 60-year-old sign atop the Hollywood hills would be returned to normal. Over the years the sign has been altered several times. It has been the canvas for Halloween tricksters and football fans wanting to send a giant-sized “hurrah” to their favourite teams.
A few years ago promarijuana advocates changed it to read “Hollyweed.”
