Award surprises axeman

Greymouth reporter

“It came from out of the blue,” was the way an axeman, Mr Tom Jackson, aged 81, of Aickens, commented on his award of the Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year Honours List for community service. Mr Jackson began his chopping career in 1921 and had almost 60 years as an axeman. He looks upon his award as recognition for the woodchopping sport. Wood-chop-ping had not had a high public image for many years, he said. The axe, he said, had carved out the development of New Zealand. During World War 11, Mr Jackson was a member of a New Zealand team which chopped before Queen Mary, the widow of King George V. Mr Jackson is still active in the sport. He assists in the preparatory work for chopping meetings and as an adviser to young choppers.
