Auckland stores run dry

PA Auckland Popular brands of beer have run out at wholesale stores throughout Auckland. So far, the South Island has not been affected. A two-week-old strike of tradesmen at Lion and Dominion Breweries has cut supplies of bottled and canned beer. An industrial mediator,

Ms Janet Scott, has called a meeting on Sunday of employers and unions involved in the dispute over pay claims.

The brewery tradesmen are due to meet on Monday to review the dispute but have said they will not return unless their union assessors recommend a settlement.

’ In Hamilton, production from the Lion brewery appeared to be continuing normally yesterday, in spite of the continuing tradesmen’s strike.

A brewery spokesmen was not available for comment yesterday, but the manager of a Lion outlet in Hamilton said supplies were still coming in as usual.
