Forest institute makes changes
PA Wellington Two new divisions have been set up at the Forest Research Institute. The forest management and resources division and the forest health and improvement division will replace the old production forest division. The chief director of research, Dr Colin Bassett, said that the old division was one of the largest research groups in the public service, and with the increasing importance of forestry in the national economy it was necessary to strengthen management of the research effort.
The institute, based mainly at Rotorua, has an international reputation for
the extent and quality of its work in wood sciences and forestry research. The work of the two new divisions and the existing wood technology division will be co-ordinated by a regional director based’ in Rotorua. Dr John Kininmonth, aged 53, formerly the director of the wood technology division, has been appointed regional director of research. Mr John Tustin, aged 43, has been appointed the dir&ctor of the new management and resources division. Dr Mike Wilcox, aged 44. is the new director of the forest health and improvement division.
