Hanmer Forest popular

The Hanmer Forest Park is popular with visitors to Hanmer Springs, according to the number of calls made on the Forest Service information centre at the park. About 15,000 people visited the information centre in the first year after it opened about seven years ago. By 1983 the numbers had risen to about 30,000 and the figures are expected to be similar for last year. The number of people using the park for recreation is known to be much

higher than that. It has been estimated that the total may be about 100,000 annually. Efforts are being made to gauge more accurately the total recreational use being made of the park. A Lincoln College student, Mr Torston Baker, is doing a research dissertation which includes the use being made of the park. Already a graduate from Otago University, Mr Baker is continuing his studies at Lincoln College for a Parks and Recreation Diploma.
