U.S. borrows equipment

Pumps and airbags belonging to Qantas have been borrowed by the United States Antarctic Support Force and flown to Antarctica to help in the salvage of the Hercules aircraft which stuck in a crevasse on Friday. The equipment was flown south on Monday. The mishap occurred when the aircraft was taxiing on the Starshot Glacier, about 386 km from McMurdo Station. The 12 people on board set up a survival camp and were rescued the next morning by another Hercules and a Navy helicopter. They included two New Zealanders, Peter Braddock and Ray Waters, who were members of a geological team studying the Trans Antarctic Mountains. The team was being moved from one camp to another when the accident happened. jpi
