APRIL 1: A tornado damages dozens of houses in Tauranga. Road-user charges rise 20 per cent. APRIL 6: About 60 workers will be made redundant when the Christchurch factory of A. and T. Burt Mechanical, Ltd, closes at the end of the month, it is announced. APRIL 10: Shirley MacLaine wins her first Oscar, for her role in “Terms of Endearment” APRIL Ik Professor Carl Wood announces the birth of what is believed to be the world’s first baby produced from a frozen embryo. Paul McFelin is jailed for 11 years and Karen McFelin for years for kidnapping Gloria Kong. APRIL 12: The total number of New Zealanders unemployed or on special work falls to 106,788. Tania Clague, of Auckland, is crowned “Miss Universe New Zealand. 1 ’ Konstantine Chernenko is named president of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet APRIL 13. The annual inflation rate drops to 3.5 per cent the lowest in 18 years. APRIL 17: A Heylen - "Eye Witness” poll shows Labour 3 per cent ahead of the Government in popularity. APRIL 18: Liz Grant is chosen to replace Rodney Bryant as presenter of “The Mainland Touch.” Three protesters who were dressed as clowns during the 1981 Springbok tour riots are awarded $lO,OOO each in damages, against the police.
APRIL 23: Commercial production from the McKee oil field in north Taranaki begins. APRIL 26: A Commission of Inquiry into the Broadcasting Corporation chronicles inept management and recommends that the corporation be replaced by a group of companies. Sketch plans for a. new six-storey Post Office building in Hereford Street are revealed.
APRIL 31: Freezing workers begin a series of rolling strikes, seeking a wage-freeze exemption.
