Phizam wins Perth Cup
The New Zealand-bred Phizam stormed away with the $225,000 Perth Cup over 3200 m at Ascot yesterday. A son of the all-conquer-ing sire of stayers, Zamazaan, Phizam was having his first outing at further than 2400 m, but the marathon proved no barrier to the five-year-old which looked the winner from the time he passed the 1000 m. The only runner to give him any work over the final stages was Swift Knight, which kicked away from the field 650 m from home, but in the straight Phizam, which had raced handy, was all power as he took over 150 m from home.
Third home was Pliancy, with the former New Zealander, Mapperley Heights, coming with a strong run and once again failing to get it all together in time.
The other former New Zealander in the race was Foxseal, which came with a searching run from well back, but ran out of steam in the straight and finished in the pack. Mapperley Heights, which has been up since the spring carnival, went out the favourite on the totalisator ahead of Phizam, with Foxseal third favourite, but
reports said a fortune had been laid with bookmakers on Phizam, and the win is expected to cost them millions.
For his jockey, Rod Kemp, the win was the first time since 1958 that a jockey has ridden the Perth “big three,” the Railway, the Derby and the Cup. For Phizam the win takes the entire’s record to eight wins from nine starts, with the last six wins in a row.
