Rape claims almost double
PA Wellington The number of rape claims reported to the Wellington Rape Crisis Centre has almost doubled, to 234, during the last year. Of all rape incidents, 68.96 per cent were committed by acquaintances or family members while 16.17 per cent were committed by strangers, said the centre’s co-ordinator, Ms Rita Siong. Incest was the highest reported form of rape, followed by acquaintances and gang rape. The centre said most victims did not report to the police or a doctor. Police National Headquarters said that 262 cases of rape had been reported in the first nine months of this year compared with 222 for the same period last year, an 18 per cent increase.
