School music funds

The unique, 20-year association between the Music Federation of New Zealand and the Westpac Banking Corporation, will continue this year with the bank making a substantial increase in its contribution to the federation’s 1985 Westpac School Music Contest. Westpac has increased its contribution from $lB,OOO to $25,000. The federation’s general manager, Elisabeth Airey, said: “This is undoubtedly one of the longest-running arts sponsorships by a commercial organisation in New Zealand. The federation is delighted with Westpac’s continued interest and support for this activity which has become an integral part of the musical life of young people throughout New Zealand.” In its first year, 1965, 350 secondary school students participated. By 1984 the numbers had grown to 3000. The bank became partners with the federation in 1966 with a contribution of $4OOO. Details of the 1985 contest will be sent to schools and music teachers throughout the country late this month.
