Family park
Total family recreation is Sivided at the Queen zabeth II Park. The sports stadium, which was built for the Commonwealth Games in 1974, has now been incorporated with other facilities into a comprehensive leisure centre for Christchurch.
The park complex has been expanded beyond the sports stadium and swimming pool and now includes a maze, “driveworld,” bumper boats, the hydroslide and mini-golf. Outdoors the park has a play area for children and a barbecue area for public use. About 1500 trees and shrubs have been planted around the grounds recently to provide shelter and soften the landscape. A solarium, opening outside from the main pool area, is a feature of the indoor complex. Swimmers
can enjoy a lie in the sun on warmer days within the privacy of the enclosed area.
For the thrill-seekers there are rides through the 110 metre tubes of the hydroslide. No special skills are needed and both swimmers and nonswimmers can enjoy the fun.
Another recent addition to the main pool, guaranteed to provide endless hours of amusement, are water hoses.
Adjacent to the main pool area is the training pool and learners’ pool. Swimming classes for young children, with some in the “water babies” class as young as three months, are held regularly. The learners’ pool is also suitable for parapleg-* ics.
Other facilities in the complex include a weight
training room, seven squash courts, a snack bar and restaurant. A creche is housed in a separate building. ’ A number of new outdoor activities have been added to the park. The maze contains a total of 2.6 kilometres of connected passageways. The wall’s positioning can be changed around to keep up the challenge for regular visitors. Mini motor bikes, racing cars and a “little squirt” fire engine are just some of the vehicles to test your skill at Driveworld.
Bumpa boats and minigolf provide lots of fun for all age groups. Both the maze and the mini-golf tracks are wide enough for wheel chairs, so these activities can be enjoyed by disabled people.
