Gold theft remand
A Greymouth goldminer appeared before Judge Frampton in the District Court in Christchurch on Monday, on a charge of stealing gold worth about $5OOO, the property of a person or persons unknown. The defendant, Anthony Raynard Berends, aged 28, was remanded in custody, without plea, to appear again on January 7,
The alleged theft was said to have occurred between October 24 and December 19, at Greymouth. A duty solicitor (Ms D. Shirtcliff) said the defendant had been remanded from Greymouth as there were no holding cells there. The prosecutor (Sergeant J. E. Dwyer) said the police opposed bail for the defendant.
