Mr Lange promises stronger line on liquor
PA Auckland Stronger enforcement of liquor laws and a different style of policing have been promised by the Prime Minister, Mr Lange, to prevent a repeat of the Queen Street riot.
Mr Lange said in Auckland on Monday, when he received the committee of inquiry’s report on the riot, that laws dealings with the sale of liquor to minors already existed and stronger .enforcement could be one way of tightening up. Mr Lange also said that there would be a different kind of policing, but not necessarily more staff, to turn around what happened on December 7 — “where people saw police as natural enemies.”
Copies of the committee report would be given to the Minister of Police, Mrs Hercus, the Mayor of Auckland, Mrs Cath T'izard, and the Cabinet. Mr Lange said details, would be made public before January 6. The committee’s chairman, Mr Peter Mahon, said that the public reaction to the riot conveyed to the inquiry was one of horror at what happened, in favour of police action and in condemnation of “troublesome people” who were violent.
